When do people consider revision rhinoplasty?

A revision (secondary) rhinoplasty is a second or later operation on a nose that has already had surgery. People look into it for different reasons, and only a surgeon who has examined your nose can tell you whether it makes sense:

  • Breathing - the nose feels blocked, or breathing is worse than before the first operation.
  • Shape - the bridge, the tip or the nostrils do not look the way you and your surgeon planned, or the nose looks uneven.
  • Change over time - the nose changed as it healed, for example a tip that dropped or a bridge that became irregular.
  • An injury - a knock to the nose after surgery changed its shape.
  • A different goal - you want a different look from the first operation.

Revision is common enough that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists the possibility of revisional surgery among the risks of any rhinoplasty. It is not a sign that you did something wrong.

How long should I wait before a revision?

Most surgeons want the nose to finish healing first. Swelling goes down over many months, and the tip can take the longest to settle, so the nose you see at 3 or 6 months is not yet the final shape. Surgeons often advise waiting around a year after the last operation before planning a revision; some plan sooner when there is a clear reason, for example a breathing problem. Your surgeon decides, after looking at your nose and your photos.

While you wait, keep the date of your operation and photos taken at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months in good light. They help a new surgeon see how your nose has changed.

Why more than a first operation? A revision usually takes longer, the surgeon works through scar tissue, and less of your own cartilage may be left, so grafts are more likely. Cartilage can come from the septum, the ear or a rib, or from a donor (cadaver); İstanbul Cerrahi Hospital surgical team lists a donor-cartilage version at €2,070. Many surgeons price the exact plan only after seeing photos. See also the revision cost section of the rhinoplasty cost guide.

What affects the price of a revision?

  • What your nose needs - a small tip correction costs less than rebuilding the bridge or the supporting cartilage.
  • Cartilage - from your own septum, ear or rib, or donor cartilage; rib or donor cartilage usually adds to the price.
  • Breathing - correcting the septum or the nasal valves in the same operation is included by some surgeons and priced separately by others.
  • How many operations you have had - each earlier operation can make the next one more complex.
  • Surgeon and hospital - experience, demand and where the surgeon operates.
  • The package - nights in hospital, hotel and transfers included or not.

Two quotes are only comparable when they cover the same work and the same extras.

How a surgeon decides if you need a revision

Expect questions and photos first, and a check in person before the operation. A surgeon will usually want to know:

  • What was done, when, by whom and in which country - and, if you have it, the operation report.
  • What worries you now: shape, breathing, or both.
  • Whether the nose has changed in the last 6 months.
  • Your health, medicines, allergies, smoking and any injury to the nose since surgery.

A good surgeon will also tell you when waiting is better, or when surgery is not needed. If you are unsure, ask two or three surgeons for a written opinion and compare what they propose, not only the price.

What photos and documents to send for a quote

Clear photos let a surgeon give a first opinion and a written quote before you travel:

  • Photos of your nose now - front, both sides, both three-quarter angles, from below and from above; daylight, no make-up or filters, hair away from the face.
  • Photos from before your first operation, if you have them, taken from the same angles.
  • Your operation report or discharge letter - or at least the date, the surgeon, the hospital and what was done.
  • Breathing - say whether one or both sides are blocked, and since when.
  • Health details - medicines, allergies and any other nose or sinus problems.

Your coordinator sends them to the surgeons you choose, and you get the quote in writing, usually within 24 hours. You pay nothing until you accept it. Get a free quote.

How to choose a surgeon for a revision

Revision is not the same job as a first rhinoplasty, so ask about it directly:

  • How many revision rhinoplasties do you do each year, and can I see revision cases like mine?
  • Will you plan cartilage grafts, and from where? What if more is needed during the operation?
  • Is a breathing correction part of the plan, and is it in the price?
  • Who operates, in which hospital, and how many nights are included?
  • What follow-up do I get after I fly home, and what happens if I need another adjustment?

Surgeons who list a revision package on &NewMe: Dr. Ali Cem Oktay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğçe Şimşek, Dr. Orhan Tuğrul, Dr. Songül Dursun, and the team at İstanbul Cerrahi Hospital. A listed package means the provider sets a revision price; it is not a measure of experience, so ask each surgeon for their own revision cases. Compare profiles, reviews and hospitals in the rhinoplasty surgeon list. Plastic surgeons and ENT (facial plastic) surgeons both do rhinoplasty; ENT surgeons are often chosen when breathing is part of the problem. How we verify providers.

Risks and realistic expectations

Revision surgery carries the risks of any rhinoplasty, such as bleeding, infection, breathing problems, numbness and a result you are not happy with. It is often more complex than a first operation, and results can be less predictable, because scar tissue and less cartilage limit what can be changed. Ask your surgeon what is realistic for your nose, what the nose may still look like at 12 months, and what a further adjustment would involve.

Swelling and bruising are normal after any rhinoplasty, and the final shape takes up to a year to appear. Get medical help at home first if you have heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain or trouble breathing after you travel.

Planning the trip

Plan for about a week in Istanbul: the packages above list 1 to 2 night(s) in hospital, and the splint usually comes off after about 7 days. Flights, travel insurance and, with some providers, hotel nights and transfers are extra. Many surgeons want to see you before you fly. Ask in writing how follow-up works once you are home. The NHS advises checking the surgeon's qualifications and the aftercare plan before you book surgery abroad.

Revision rhinoplasty questions

When is revision rhinoplasty considered?

When a nose that has had surgery causes breathing problems, looks different from what was planned, or changed shape as it healed. Only a surgeon who has examined your nose and seen your photos can say whether a revision is advisable. Revision is common: the possibility of revisional surgery is listed among the risks of any rhinoplasty.

How long should I wait before revision rhinoplasty?

Surgeons often advise around a year after the last operation, because swelling takes many months to go down and the final shape appears slowly. Some plan earlier when there is a clear reason such as a breathing problem. Your surgeon decides after assessing your nose.

How much does revision rhinoplasty cost in Turkey?

€1,750-€4,000 on &NewMe, depending on the surgeon, the hospital and whether donor cartilage is used (İstanbul Cerrahi Hospital surgical team €1,750, Dr. Ali Cem Oktay €2,900, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğçe Şimşek €3,250, Dr. Orhan Tuğrul €3,500, Dr. Songül Dursun €4,000; live prices, 14 October 2026). With providers that list both, a revision costs €250 to €900 more than their first rhinoplasty. A written quote confirms the price for your nose.

Why does a revision cost more than a first rhinoplasty?

It usually takes longer, the surgeon works through scar tissue, and less of your own cartilage may be left, so grafts are more likely. Some surgeons also include a breathing correction in a revision and others price it separately.

Will I need cartilage from my rib or donor cartilage?

Sometimes. After an earlier operation there may be less septum cartilage left, so surgeons may use cartilage from the ear or rib, or donor (cadaver) cartilage. Ask whether grafts are in your quote and what happens if more is needed during the operation.

What photos and documents should I send?

Photos of your nose now (front, both sides, three-quarter angles, from below and above, in daylight), photos from before your first operation if you have them, and your operation report, or at least the date, the surgeon, the hospital and what was done. Mention any breathing problems and your health details. Full list.

Is revision rhinoplasty riskier than a first operation?

It carries the same risks as any rhinoplasty and is often more complex, with less predictable results, because of scar tissue and less cartilage. Choose a surgeon who does revisions regularly, ask to see revision cases and ask what is realistic for your nose.

How long do I stay in Istanbul, and what follow-up do I get?

Plan for about a week: 1 to 2 night(s) in hospital on the listed packages, then the splint usually comes off after about 7 days. Ask each surgeon, in writing, how follow-up works after you fly home and who to contact if something worries you.
