What is gastric botox?
Gastric botox is a non-surgical weight-loss treatment. During an endoscopy, a doctor injects botulinum toxin into parts of the stomach wall. This slows how quickly the stomach empties and can reduce hunger, so you feel full sooner and for longer.
There are no cuts and you usually go home the same day. The effect wears off after about 4–6 months, so it works best as a short-term help alongside a diet plan - it is not a replacement for a gastric sleeve.

Frequently asked questions
Is gastric botox surgery?
No. It is done through an endoscope passed through the mouth - there are no cuts and no stitches.
Does it hurt?
You are sedated during the endoscopy, so most people remember little of it. A sore throat or bloating afterwards is common and short-lived.
How long does it last?
The effect usually fades after about 4–6 months. The habits you build during that time decide how much of the weight stays off.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Usually 1–2 days: tests and the procedure on one day, and flying home the next.
Can I repeat it?
Yes, some people repeat it after the effect has worn off. Your doctor will advise whether it makes sense for you.
Gastric botox, balloon or sleeve?
Botox is the lightest option for modest weight loss. A gastric balloon usually gives more weight loss over 6–12 months. A gastric sleeve is surgery and is meant for larger, long-term weight loss.

How gastric botox works
Botulinum toxin relaxes muscle. Injected into the stomach wall - usually the upper part (fundus) and the outlet (antrum) - it slows the muscle contractions that push food onward. Food stays in the stomach longer and some patients produce less of the hunger hormone ghrelin, so portions get smaller more easily. It starts working within a few days and fades as the nerves recover.
Who is it for?
- A BMI roughly between 27 and 40 - often people who want to lose 5–15 kg
- People who do not qualify for, or do not want, surgery
- People ready to follow a diet and activity plan for the months it works
- No prior stomach surgery (ask your doctor if you have had any)
It is not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people with neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, or with an allergy to botulinum toxin. Using botox in the stomach for weight loss is an off-label use - your doctor should explain this.
How much weight can I lose?
Results vary a lot. Many patients lose a moderate amount over the first 3–6 months, and studies show the results depend heavily on diet changes. It is best seen as a head start - if you need to lose a large amount of weight, a gastric balloon or surgery usually does more.
What happens on the day
You fast for about 8 hours. Under light sedation, a thin camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the stomach and the injections are given through it. The endoscopy takes 20–30 minutes; after a few hours of rest you can usually leave. The doctor also sees the stomach lining during the endoscopy, which can show problems such as ulcers.
Risks and side effects
- A sore throat, bloating or mild nausea for a day or two
- Indigestion or reflux
- Constipation
- Risks of sedation and endoscopy (rare)
- Very rarely, weakness elsewhere in the body if the toxin spreads
After the procedure
Start with liquids and soft food for a day or two, then return to normal food in smaller portions. Eat slowly, stop when you feel full, drink between meals and add regular activity - this is where most of the result comes from. The treatment can be repeated after the effect wears off.
